A Legacy Reborn

A Landmark Reborn

More Than Stone and Timber: A Community Built This

Step into the heart of St. George’s story at the Old Pioneer Courthouse—a treasured landmark that has stood as a pillar of community and civic life since 1876. After a thoughtful renovation, this iconic red sandstone building is reopening to the public, restored not just in structure, but in spirit.

The restored courthouse isn’t simply an historic site, rather, it will stand as a gathering place—a living testament to the resilience, faith, and determination of Southern Utah’s early settlers. From the very beginning, the Pioneer Courthouse was meant to gather the community. It was built—literally and spiritually—by the people of this region. That spirit lives on. Now, it’s ready to welcome a new generation.

Through collaboration and the support of Washington County and local partners, United We Pledge administers this building to unite our community, while also using it as our headquarters for our youth civics education initiative, Give Me Liberty.

A Legacy of Community and Service

St. George was designated the seat of Washington County in 1863 and began building its future with this very courthouse. Completed in 1876, it served as the center of justice, governance, and community connection for nearly a century—until 1960.

Through the decades, it has hosted court proceedings, civic meetings, and celebrations that shaped the region. Its thick sandstone walls, pyramidal roof, and distinctive cupola have watched over the city’s growth, earning it a place on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970.

Now, after essential restoration work to preserve its foundation and historic integrity, the courthouse reopens as a vibrant community hub—honoring the past while serving the present.

A Courthouse With More Than A Courtroom

For 90 years, this building stood as the civic heart of Washington County. Every community, every family, every voice passed through its doors. Judges ruled. Citizens gathered. Justice was served.
Now, it serves a new purpose—keeping memory alive.
Constructed from locally quarried sandstone, the courthouse is a marvel of pioneer engineering:
18-inch-thick walls that whisper of endurance
Original hand-crafted chandeliers casting warm, golden light
A striking cupola, once designed to house a gallows—a solemn reminder of frontier justice
The original jail cells, where history still echoes off the iron bars
Walk these halls and feel the weight of time. Imagine pioneers facing scorching summers, scarce water, and uncertain futures—yet choosing to stay, to build, to thrive.

Preserved for the Future

This renovation was more than cosmetic. Years of erosion threatened the building’s sandstone foundation. Thanks to dedicated preservation efforts, the courthouse has been stabilized and restored with care, ensuring it remains a landmark for generations to come.

Every brick, beam, and bulletin tells a story. And now, the next chapter begins.
